Prospects 49ers can draft to make Brock Purdy’s life easier

These rookies could provide support in Brock Purdy’s third year

BYU offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia (78)

With 10 picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers have options to solidify a roster to take the pressure off of quarterback Brock Purdy and the Niners to return to the Super Bowl.

In addition to their own first-, second- and third-rounds picks, the reigning NFC champs have three selections to take in the fourth round.

Beefing up the offensive line is a sound decision, and the 49ers could look to do that.

Insert Kingsley Suamataia at offensive tackle.

The 6-foot-6′ and 325-pound prospect out of BYU will help protect Purdy from opposing defenses. In 16 games last year, Purdy was sacked 28 times.

In over 1,300 total snaps the past two seasons, Suamataia gave up just two sacks last year for BYU and none in 2022. It may be wise for San Francisco to look for a replacement for left tackle Trent Williams, who turns 36 years old this summer.

How can adding to the defense help out Brock Purdy

Only four other teams had more total takeaways, 28, than San Francisco last year. When the defense forces its opponent to turn the ball over, Purdy and Co. have more opportunities to produce.

Safety Cole Bishop out of Utah not only can cover the ball in the secondary but has shown he get to other teams’ quarterback as well.

Bishop has a pair of picks last year along with three sacks and three passes defended.

More pieces for 49ers’ O-Line on the way

Guard Zack Zinter, if available, is worth calling his name at the podium with the 94th overall selection. The former Michigan Wolverine could help back up Jon Feliciano who is on the wrong side of 30 years old and hinted at retirement already.

Zinter (and Suamatia) would give an affordable option for a few years to prevent rushers taking Purdy down. The offensive line is not a bad piece to the roster to look at getting younger and more versatile.

Also listed at 6-foot-6′ and 325 pounds, Zinter’s experience and leadership from his college seasons will roll over nicely.

Taking a player like Zinter just makes sense to take in the third round.

Running back depth never hurts, ever

The first selection of the fourth round is a great place to add another running back behind Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell. In adding former Wisconsin Badger Braelon Allen, the 49ers have depth and options to combat the potential (and infamous) injury bug.

Jordan Mason is still with the 49ers, but this could allow San Francisco to move Mitchell in a trade to alleviate some salary cap, too.

Many players are looking to get the call to go pro but these are some of the more viable options to give Purdy some relief in year number three.
