Unheralded weapon leaves Eagles practice with concerning injury

McCallan Castles’ football journey has led him from South Tahoe to Cal, then UC Davis, Tennessee, and now the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles’ sixth training camp practice, held at Lincoln Financial Field saw undrafted rookie McCallan Castles make a brief appearance before having to exit early. During a scrimmage with the third-team offense, Castles suffered a left leg injury and limped off for evaluation by trainers.

Castles, a tight end and one of eight undrafted rookies the Eagles signed after the recent NFL Draft, previously played for the Tennessee Volunteers in 2023. He also had earlier college experiences at Cal (2018-2019) and UC Davis (2020-2022). He was considered a promising candidate with the potential to catch the coaches’ attention and secure a spot on the team.

The former Tennessee Volunteer signed an undrafted free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles valued at $230,000.

Castles, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 235 pounds, began his college career at Cal before transferring to UC Davis for three seasons and later playing one year at Tennessee.

At Cal, he played in just four games and recorded one catch for 15 yards. He then moved to the FCS level with UC Davis, where he earned All-Big Sky honors three times. Over 28 games with the Aggies, Castles caught 69 passes for 928 yards and nine touchdowns.

In his final college season, Castles transferred to the SEC, where he recorded 22 receptions for 283 yards and five touchdowns as a sixth-year senior at Tennessee. Throughout his college career, he appeared in 45 games with 29 starts, totaling 91 catches for 1,226 yards and 14 touchdowns. Castles also participated in the East-West Shrine Bowl pre-draft showcase.

The former Tennessee Vols tight end, seems to be in a strong position to secure a spot on the Philadelphia Eagles’ 53-man roster this fall. Known for being a significant threat on third downs and in the red zone, McCallan Castles could have presented matchup challenges for opponents.

Everyone is hoping his injury isn’t too serious and doesn’t hinder his chances.
