Kansas City Chiefs’ latest signing is a gaze into crystal ball at tight end

It’s not the position that Chiefs fans would think demands any sort of attention at this stage of training camp, but Kansas City’s front office is taking a long look at the future of tight end this preseason. That’s because they’ve added a developmental prospect at the position with the signing of Geor’quarius Spivey to the roster.

Kansas City Chiefs' latest signing is a gaze into crystal ball at tight end

Spivey reportedly worked out for the Chiefs and then received a contract offer, per NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

Spivey is an interesting case as a player with a lot of proverbial tread left on the tires after catching only 28 total passes in his entire collegiate career. Spivey began at Mississippi State only to transfer to TCU after a new coaching hire phased out the tight end position completely in the team’s new offense. With one season left of eligibility, Spivey elected to return home and finish his career with the Bulldogs.

The Chiefs are testing out a long-term prospect at tight end with their latest signing in training camp.

The verdict is out on Spivey as a prospect although a 6’5, 245 lb. frame is a solid starting point. That said, the Chiefs are going to be interested in challenging Spivey physically and mentally to see just how high his potential will go.

Remember that these Chiefs coaches have been here many times before. They made solid pro players out of fringe prospects like Ross Travis, Demetrius Harris, Jody Fortson, and others.

As for the Chiefs signing another tight end at this stage, it’s certainly not a present need in any way, but these sorts of signings aren’t intended to pay off until 2025 or 2026 anyway. Remember that Travis Kelce is in his mid-thirties with two years left on his deal, Noah Gray is in his contract year, and Irv Smith signed a single-season contract. In other words, the position could look very different just one year from now with Jared Wiley as the lone long-term asset in place.
