FerryHawks Fodder: Staten Island brings on a former Red Sox pitcher, plus an MLB catcher and two additional hurlers

The Staten Island FerryHawks are bringing in some Major reinforcements. The ball club in St. George announced the signings of four more players over the past week, including two with prior Major League experience.

Former Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City Royals catcher Oscar Hernandez, as well as one-time Boston Red Sox reliever Mike Shawaryn will be taking their talents to Staten Island University Hospital Community Park this season.

Additionally, former Minor League hurler Bryan Warzek inked a deal, while Christian Capuano also signed on to return after spending the past two seasons with the club.

Oscar Hernandez

The 30-year-old Venezuelan native made his MLB debut in 2015 with Arizona. He also played with the Kansas City Royals in 2020.

In 26 career big league games, Hernandez slashed .196 with one home run. He played in 10 Minor League seasons and spent last season in the Frontier League.

Mike Shawaryn

The 29-year-old right-hander was a drafted in the fifth round by the Red Sox in 2016 and appeared out of the pen for them in 2019. The University of Maryland product pitched in 14 games games that year and struck out 29 in 20.1 innings, but surrendered 22 runs.

He posted four seasons in the Minors with Boston and another with the Kansas City Royals organization before he spent last season in the American Association.

Bryan Warzek

A Clifton Park, NY native, he was drafted in the sixth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018 and spent two seasons in their Minor League system, plus another with the Seattle Mariners organization. The 27-year-old lefty is University of New Orleans and pitched in the American Association each of the past two seasons. He struck out 77 in 49.1 innings last year, posting a 2.79 era primarily as a reliever.

Christian Capuano

The 26-year-old right-hander returns to the FerryHawks after a stellar 2023 season, during which he went 10-4 with a 3.82 ERA (5th in Atlantic League) and 118 Ks (4th in AL).

The 6-foot-4 starter is a Fairleigh Dickinson (Florham) product.
