Biles, hailed as a legend in gymnastics, has found herself embroiled in an unexpected controversy surrouding her husband Jonathan Owens. Following a comment made by Owens during a podcast interview, the 27-year-old Olympic champion is now facing backlash from fans:

During an appearance on The Pivot podcast, Owens, a 29-year-old NFL player, made a statement that didn’t sit well with Biles’s fanbase. He remarked, “I always say that the men are the catch. I’m like, ‘It’s kinda early [to commit].’ But you know, it happens when you least expect it. When we hung out, we just hit it off instantly. Laughed the whole night.”

Owens further shared that his first impression of Biles was shaped by her social media presence, saying, “The first thing that I saw was that she just had a bunch of [Instagram] followers. So in my mind, I’m like, ‘Okay, she’s gotta be good’.”

Following Owens’s remarks, fans of Biles took to social media, urging her to reconsider her relationship. The comment “I’m the catch” became a particular point of contention, leading many to criticize Owens and call for Biles to “divorce this man.”

Simone Biles addressed the situation publicly, revealing on the Call Her Daddy podcast that the backlash left her feeling overwhelmed. “I go on Twitter and everybody’s like, ‘Divorce this man, he’s mean,’” Biles shared, expressing her frustration with the public’s reaction.

Despite initially finding the memes and jokes amusing, Biles admitted that the ongoing criticism caused her to “break down,” leading her to defend her husband vehemently. “Talk about me all you want, but don’t come for my family,” Biles said, standing up for Owens.

Chicago is looking to turn around their franchise, and while a backup safeties’ marriage life isn’t going to derail their plans, it certainly becomes something one of their players is thinking about.

Despite missing the Bears’ first preseason game against the Houston Texans, the 29-year-old defensive back is expected to return to practice on Sunday, August 4. Consequently, he will miss some of Biles’ other individual competitions.

However, he’ll have had his fill of history, and his teammates, including star receiver DJ Moore, are eager to have him back.

“I know he was out there supporting his wife, which she did amazing and everybody was watching, so kudos to them,” receiver DJ Moore told the Green Light Podcast.

“I know he’ll be back ready to work, so can’t wait for him to get back and tell the stories.”

Everyone’s first question to Owens better be something to the effect of: “What’s it like to be in the presence of greatness?”
