Social Media Goes Crazy Over Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ Top 100 Ranking

NFL players voted Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes the fourth-best player in the league.

The No. 1 player in 2023, Mahomes is coming off winning the first back-to-back Super Bowls in 20 years. However, he fell three spots in this year’s player-based vote, which stirred up several prominent media members.

Chiefs: Media Rips Patrick Mahomes’ Ranking in Top 100 Players List

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Voted 4th-Best Player

“I don’t care who’s making the list. If Patrick Mahomes isn’t No. 1, the list is [poop emoji],” Pro Football Talk posted on X on August 2.

“4 or fore as in get out the F’in way?” The Athletic’s Dianna Russini posted.

“Complete nonsense,” ESPN’s Field Yates posted.

“The 3 players ahead of Mahomes on this list (Tyreek [Hill], Lamar [Jackson], CMC [Christian McCaffrey]) were all beaten by him in this past postseason alone,” The 33rd Team’s social media team posted.

“This almost feels like something an aggregation account would do to farm engagement,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer posted. “(Was @NFL hacked?).”

Mahomes completed a career-high 67.2% of his passes in 2023.

He also posted a career-low 13.3% bad throw rate, per Pro Football Reference. However, his 4,183 yards and 27 touchdowns to 14 interceptions were all steps back from his 2022 line (5,250/41/12). The Chiefs also won four fewer games in 2024 than they did in 2023.

Still, Mahomes and the Chiefs beat Hill’s Miami Dolphins in the Wildcard round. They toppled Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship game.

McCaffrey and the San Francisco 49ers fell in the Super Bowl.

“I keep trying to tell y’all. Stop motivating him,” ESPN’s Matt Miller posted.

Tyreek Hill Reacts to No. 1 Ranking

Hill is the first receiver in NFL history to land the No. 1 spot. He said he expected plenty of responses to the vote. He was correct.

“Don’t block your blessing hating on me,” Hill posted.

Hill ranked seventh on the list in 2023. He went on to lead the NFL with a career-high 1,799 yards – the seventh-most in a single season – also leading the way with 13 receiving touchdowns on 119 receptions. Three active players have posted a better mark in their careers.

They are Cooper Kupp of the Los Angeles Rams, free agent Julio Jones, and Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings.

Jefferson is the highest-paid receiver in the league.

“Tyreek Hill comes in at No. 1 on NFL Network’s list of the top 100 players in the league, as determined by players,” Florio captioned a post for a story on Hill’s ranking. “That won’t make Hill any less determined to get an adjustment to his contract.”

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs Set Bar in NFL Top 100 List

While Mahomes’ ranking fell and sparked some controversy, the Chiefs were still the standard-bearers on the annual list.

With Chris Jones checking in at No. 6 and Travis Kelce at No. 9, the Chiefs were the only team to boast three players in the top 100 list. Kelce dropped four slots from No. 5 in 2023. Jones ranked No. 10 in the 2023 iteration.

The Chiefs were the only team with three players in the top 10 in 2023 as well.
