Training camp is underway for the Philadelphia Eagles. While some players look ready for the regular season, others remain a longshot to make the 53-man roster. Here’s where things stand after a full week of camp.
Hot: DT Jalen Carter
The No. 9 pick in last year’s draft had no problem tossing 6-foot-7, 363-pound Mekhi Becton aside in the team’s first padded practice. According to Bleeding Green Nation’s Brandon Lee Gowton, Carter also blew up a run in the backfield, wrecked a designed QB run and deflected a pass at the line of scrimmage.
Carter had 33 tackles, six sacks and a pair of forced fumbles as a rookie last season and looks to improve on those numbers under new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
Not: OL Tyler Steen
Steen was seen as the team’s starting right guard heading into camp, but an ankle injury on Day 3 has kept last year’s third-round pick on the sidelines. That could open the door for a player like Becton. His struggles against Carter aside, Becton is a former first-round pick with experience and athleticism that could win him the job if Steen continues to miss time.
Hot: LB Jalyx Hunt
As a converted safety from Houston Christian University, Hunt was seen as a project when Philadelphia took him in the third round of this year’s draft but so far he’s played better than expected.
According to SI.com’s Ed Kracz, the 23-year-old linebacker used a violent hand chop and stiff arm to push left tackle Jordan Mailata backward on the first day of camp and had similar success against backup tackle Fred Johnson. Mailata is 6-foot-8 and 365 pounds. Johnson is 6-foot-7 and 323 pounds. Hunt is 6-foot-3 and generously listed at 252 pounds, but could see meaningful snaps in a rotation with edge-rushers like Bryce Huff and Nolan Smith.
Not: OL Matt Hennessy
With experience playing both guard and center, Philadelphia signed the former Temple Owl to compete at both positions, but according to Dave Zangaro of nbcsportsphiladelphia.com, the former Falcon hasn’t seen a first-team rep and lost the second-team center spot to rookie Dylan McMahon.
The team also added free agent linemen like Max Scharping and Nick Gates, putting Hennessy on the roster bubble heading into Friday’s preseason game against the Jets.
Hot: CB Quinyon Mitchell
Thanks to a solid camp by Isaiah Rodgers, this year’s first-round pick hasn’t locked down the starting left cornerback spot just yet, but he’s looked fantastic as the first-team nickel cornerback.
Not only did Mitchell go 2-for-2 against A.J. Brown in recent red zone drills, he stared down the team’s Pro Bowl wide receiver afterwards. Brown and Mitchell have been trash talking one another since camp began, something Brown thinks will help his rookie teammate down the road.
“I know these are camp battles, but ultimately, I’m just trying to get him prepared for when we play in September and that can carry on,” Brown told reporters. “He hasn’t backed down not one time, and that’s what I want to see.”
Not: RB Tyrion Davis-Price
New offensive coordinator Kellen Moore likes to throw to his running backs. Saquon Barkley, Kenneth Gainwell and Will Shipley can all catch the ball, something Davis-Price hasn’t been able to do.
The former 49er had no catches in seven games with San Francisco and he’s reportedly dropped several passes in camp. If he doesn’t get a handle on things, the team could look to add another player.
