The Last Of Us Season 2 Trailer Teases Violent Fallout Of Joel's Lie & Key Game Scenes

The first footage for The Last of Us season 2 has arrived. HBO’s hit video game adaptation is expected to return in 2025 with a new season focusing on the events of The Last of Us Part IIThe Last of Us season 1 ended with Joel (Pedro Pascal) saving his young charge, Ellie (Bella Ramsey), from a procedure that was going to kill her, but potentially provide a cure to the fungal infection ravaging the world. However, he killed a number of people in order to do so, and he lied to Ellie about what happened.

As part of a video teasing its slate for the rest of 2024 and 2025, Max revealed the first trailer for The Last of Us season 2. Check it out below, with the Last of Us portion beginning at 1:16:

Easily the longest segment of the video, the first footage for The Last of Us season 2 finds Joel alluding to what happened at the Fireflies’ hospital while speaking with Catherine O’Hara’s mystery character. The explosive clip also reveals peeks at new cast members Isabela Merced and Jeffrey Wright, along with several action shots.

The Last Of Us Season 2 Will Adapt Part II

Nevertheless, the footage clearly establishes that season 2 will be just as intense as season 1.

The Last of Us premiered in early 2023 to great acclaim and quickly cemented itself as one of the strongest video game adaptations to arrive in recent years. The hope is that season 2 will continue that winning streak as it moves into the divisive second game, which could end up spanning multiple seasons. The first glimpse of the new episodes confirms Joel’s lie will continue to hang heavy over his relationship with Ellie, who is shown screaming and firing a gun at various points in the trailer.

Though O’Hara’s Last of Us character has so far been kept under wraps, it almost looks like she will be a therapist to Joel. While this seems unlikely purely because Joel isn’t a very forthcoming character, at the very least it seems she will force him to confront his past actions. Other new characters shown in the footage are clearer. Merced will play Dina, Ellie’s love interest, while Wright will reprise the character he played in the games, Isaac Dixon.

Missing from the footage is Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, who is a key game character confirmed to appear in season 2.

Most of the scenes shown in the Last of Us season 2 trailer are quick, offering only brief glimpses of Tommy (Gabriel Luna) defending his Jackson community from an attack and Ellie hurrying to get away from an infected. Nevertheless, the footage clearly establishes that season 2 will be just as intense as season 1. With Joel’s lie at the center of the story, The Last of Us sets up a devastating and emotional batch of episodes, which are set to arrive on HBO sometime in 2025.
