The Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes might be about to get better.
After winning back-to-back Super Bowls, Mahomes and the Chiefs have their sights set on an history-making three-peat and to help them get there they may have finally found their replacement for Tyreek Hill.
Like the rest of the NFL the Chiefs have been in training camp for just over a week, and Mahomes has been slinging the ball all over the yard to rookie receiver Xavier Worthy – not to mention chewing over rivals’ behaviour.
The three-time Super Bowl MVP has built up an instant rapport with the first round pick on the training field of Missouri Western State University in St Joseph – while also seeing Wales rugby star take his first steps into the NFL.
It’s perhaps no surprise as Worthy’s record-setting pace was evident at the Scouting Combine, when Mahomes tweeted “4.25 is crazy.” A post he later corrected to reflect’s Worthy’s 4.21 time in the 40-yard dash.
Free agent recruit Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown has also sparkled since his arrival from Baltimore in the offseason and a revamped receiving corps gives Mahomes fresh impetus for the new season..
The pair have electric speed and give Mahomes his best downfield threat since the departure of one of his favorite targets – the ‘Cheetah’.
Hill was also quick to react to Worthy’s Combine performance: “4.2 is crazy, sheesh,” he posted to X back in March, and Worthy wound up in Missouri as the most fitting replacement since Hill’s exit.
The 30-year-old was traded to the Miami Dolphins two years ago and while the Chiefs have hardly struggled – they have won two more Vince Lombardi trophies after all – they have done so on the back of a strong defense and the ever reliable Travis Kelce.
However tight end Kelce, who has been enjoying an offseason of globe trotting with pop superstar girlfriend Taylor Swift is not getting any younger and took a while to get going last season before catching fire in the postseason.
That may be something to look out for again, especially with Brown and Worthy likely to provide a threat that will give opposition defensive backs sleepless nights.
Mahomes finding speedy receivers will open up the field for Kelce, and should ease the 34-year-old’s aching limbs after he found himself the main focus of the opposition defense for much of last season.
Only Rashee Rice came close to Kelce’s 984 yards for the season. The first year rookie totalled 938 on 78 catches, with Justin Watson third on the list with just under 500 yards.
The prospect of Kelce and Rice being joined by Brown and Worthy under the offensive genius of Andy Reid has Chiefs fans excited about what could be in store for a potentially historic season
“Seems like an upgrade over Skyy, MVS and Toney which looked like the starters last yr at this point,” one fan posted on X.

Another added: “I just want to thank the Buffalo Bills for gift wrapping Xavier Worthy to Patrick Mahomes.”
The Chiefs traded with AFC rival Buffalo Bills to move up to the 28th overall pick to select Worthy, the 21-year-old receiver out of the University of Texas who set a new 40-yard dash record at the Combine.
And he is already making a impression on Reid who said earlier this summer: “He’s on track to be the best receiver in his class.
With a couple of shiny new toys to play with, Mahomes and his training field link-ups has put the rest of the league on notice with just weeks to go before the start of the season.
The Chiefs will kick off the new season against the Baltimore Ravens in a repeat of the AFC Championship game.
Arrowhead Stadium will host the start of the 2024 season on Thursday September 5 and will also feature the latest unveiling of their championship banner.
