Patrick Mahomes Helped Stop Potential Fight at Chiefs Practice

The Chiefs are no stranger to practice skirmishes at training, especially in the brutal, muggy heat in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Patrick Mahomes Helped Stop Potential Fight at Chiefs Practice

Rashee Rice got into a brief kerfuffle with the defense on Tuesday, complete with throwing a football at linebacker Jack Cochrane after a tackle and Drue Tranquill’s helmet briefly getting ripped off.

A new video shows three-time Super Bowl MVP physically restraining Tranquill following the incident, displaying his leadership while ensuring the fight didn’t go overboard.

Patrick Mahomes Restrains Drue Tranquill During Practice Skirmish

Tranquill is obviously upset and has to be pulled away by Mahomes, who directs him away from the crowd and helps diffuse the situation.

These incidents happen routinely during camp, especially given these are grown men playing a physical game fighting for their financial livelihoods. Tranquill is one of the most important members of the defense, so Mahomes was wise to get the explosive playmaker away from the energetic crowd.

Andy Reid encourages passion in his players, though there’s obviously a point at which too much passion can become dangerous. The last thing anyone in the organization wants is an injury following one of these incidents.

However, this kind of fiery showing doesn’t hurt anyone. Provided the Chiefs can channel this energy and use it as fuel, Kansas City should stay one step ahead of the competition.

Reid’s practices are notoriously difficult. Players routinely credit the intensity for preparing them down the line in the regular season, and football is already an emotional game. Fans shouldn’t look too far into this. In fact, I’d expect at least one more physical altercation before camp is officially over.
