Wanya Morris' injury scare has Chiefs crossing their fingers at training camp

The Kansas City Chiefs are crossing their fingers at training camp in St. Joseph on Wednesday after watching offensive tackle Wanya Morris suffer what looked like a knee injury in practice.

Per reporters on site, trainers attended to Morris after he went down and other Chiefs players also took a knee in response while waiting for him to receive treatment. Fortunately, he was able to eventually leave the field under his own power and has yet to leave practice—all good signs in the interim.

Morris is in competition for the starting left tackle role, although in recent days, the first-team reps have largely gone to rookie Kingsley Suamataia. The Chiefs selected Suamataia in the second round of this year’s draft out of Brigham Young to serve as the primary competitor for Morris, who was last year’s third-round selection out of Oklahoma.

Even if he loses out on the left tackle battle, Morris is an important depth piece as a likely swing tackle for the Chiefs and any injury there would make the team feel quite vulnerable on the bookends. Even with Suamataia and Jawaan Taylor as the starting blockers outside, the Chiefs would have little behind them without Morris, save for Lucas Niang.

It will be interesting to see what the team has to say about Morris’ condition and his availability going forward.
