Kansas City Chiefs Harrison Butker Stands By Controversial Statements

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off of back-to-back Super Bowl seasons. Patrick Mahomes showed that he doesn’t need to have an elite offense around him to produce. After a whole year of struggling, the team turned it on in the playoffs and ran the table. A big part of the team over the past half-decade is kicker Harrison Butker. He made waves this offseason with controversial comments during a college graduation speech. The kicker stood by those comments when asked about them in training camp.

Kansas City Chiefs Harrison Butker Stands By Controversial Statements

Kansas City Chiefs Harrison Butker On Comments

In the summer, Harrison Butker gave a speech at Benedictine College which is a small Catholic school in Kansas. His comments went viral as many people viewed them as sexist. He said that being a homemaker was more valuable for a woman than any workplace accomplishment. When asked about the comments in training camp, the Kansas City Chiefs kicker stood by them.

“I’m going to stand behind what it is I’m saying. I kind of look at the offseason as a little bit of a maybe five-month period where I can just represent me as Harrison Butker as a faithful Catholic. And then obviously when it gets to the season, I try to focus as much as I can on football and not being a distraction for the Chiefs.”

Butker is standing by the comments but he doesn’t want them to become a distraction. The Kansas City Chiefs certainly do not think this will be an issue. They gave him an extension to make him the highest-paid kicker in the league. While Mahomes gets a lot of the attention, rightfully so, Butker has made some big kicks in his career.

Three-Peat Incoming?

It’s hard to bet against the Kansas City Chiefs at this point. Last year, many analysts wrote them off after a subpar season. The offense looked disjointed, but it was the defense that carried the team in many games. They made some upgrades in the offseason. Marquise “Hollywood” Brown was brought in on a one-year deal. They drafted speedster Xavier Worthy, and he has been impressive in training camp so far.

The biggest question mark would be the loss of L’Jarius Sneed. He was traded to the Tennessee Titans in the offseason and was one of the best cornerbacks last year. However, the team has shown they can trade away star players and still put a winning product on the field.

The Harrison Butker comments will no doubt be mentioned throughout the season but it shouldn’t be a distraction. Both Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes have downplayed the comments which helped diffuse the situation. All eyes will be on the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason as they look to make NFL history.
