It’s early in the season. Super early. But it’s never too early to check in on how former Red Sox players are doing (through one week) with their new teams.
Ex-Red Sox from 2023 roster:
Alex Verdugo, Yankees: The 27-year-old has started all seven of New York’s games so far in left field. He’s 4-for-25 (.160) with a .214 on-base percentage, .280 slugging percentage, one homer, three runs, three RBIs, two walks and two strikeouts. Boston traded Verdugo to the Yankees in December for reliever Greg Weissert and pitching prospects Richard Fitts and Nicholas Judice.
Justin Turner, Blue Jays: The 39-year-old DH is 7-for-22 (.318) with a .423 on-base percentage, .636 slugging percentage, 1.059 OPS, one homer, four doubles, four runs, four RBIs, three walks and three strikeouts in seven games. Turner signed with Toronto in free agency in late January.
Chris Sale, Braves: The 35-year-old lefty received a no-decision in his first start vs. the Phillies. He gave up two runs, five hits and two walks while striking out seven in 5 ⅓ innings. He also hit a batter. He gave up a leadoff home run (his second pitch of the game) to former Red Sox teammate Kyle Schwarber. Boston traded Sale to Atlanta for second baseman Vaughn Grissom in December. He topped out at 97.0 mph and averaged 94.9 mph with his 48 four-seam fastballs, per Baseball Savant. He mixed in 30 sliders, four changeups and one sinker.
James Paxton, Dodgers: The 35-year-old lefty threw 5 scoreless innings in his first start. He earned the win vs. the Giants, giving up four hits and five walks while striking out five. He topped out at 95.5 mph and averaged 93.7 mph with his 68 four-seam fastballs, per Baseball Savant. Paxton signed with the Dodgers in free agency in January.
Adam Duvall, Braves: The 35-year-old has appeared in three games so far, going 3-for-10 (.300) with a double, run, three RBIs, one walk and three strikeouts. Duvall signed as a free agent with Atlanta in mid-March.
John Schreiber, Royals: The 30-year-old righty has tossed three scoreless outings so far. He has given up two hits and no walks while striking out two in 3 innings. He has hit two batters. Boston traded Schreiber to Kansas City in February for pitching prospect David Sandlin.
Kiké Hernández, Dodgers: The 32-year-old is 3-for-15 (.200) with three RBIs, one walk and three strikeouts in six games. Boston traded Hernández to the Dodgers last July. He then re-signed with LA in free agency during the offseason.
Christian Arroyo, Brewers: The 28-year-old signed a minor league contract with the Brewers in the offseason. He did not opt out of his contract and began the season on Triple-A Nashville’s IL.
Luis Urías, Mariners: The 26-year-old third baseman/second baseman is 1-for-11 with a double, RBI, three walks and five strikeouts in six games. Boston traded Urías to Seattle in November for right-handed reliever Isaiah Campbell who has allowed one run in 3 innings (three appearances) for Boston so far.
Zack Littell, Rays: The 28-year-old, who pitched in two games for Boston last year before being designated for assignment, earned a victory in his first start against Toronto. He pitched 6 scoreless innings and allowed four hits and two walks while striking out six. He has a 3.68 ERA in 27 outings (15 starts) for Tampa since Boston designated him.
