Steelers Rookie Troy Fautanu Suffers Apparent Knee Injury Versus Houston Texans

The Pittsburgh Steelers held their first preseason matchup of the 2024 season Friday night as they hosted the Houston Texans. The Steelers came up short with a score of 20-12, after falling to a quick 17-0 deficit. Steeler Nation may have tuned into this preseason game more than they normally would, and that would be to see how first-rounder Troy Fautanuis coming along. The Steelers’ rookie offensive tackle was unfortunately seen in a brace on his leg shortly after the loss in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers and their offense started off pretty slow during their first outing. The first teamers weren’t able to score any points, and there was sloppiness all around. Quarterback Justin Fieldsand center Nate Herbig faulted two fumbles on miscued snaps early in the game, keeping the offense behind the chains. Fautanu certainly had some rookie struggles Friday night as well, but there’s no shame in that. Fautanu’s biggest concern is staying healthy, but he’s apparently already getting banged up.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlindid not have Fautanu on his short list of injured players, which only had second-year defensive lineman Keeanu Benton on it. Tomlin and the Steelers will have more information on Fautanu and his leg concern when he meets with the media again.

Fields and the majority of the starters were done by the end of the first quarter. Their new offensive strategy under Arthur Smith looked splashy and creative Friday night, but their executional mistakes held them back greatly from scoring. The running backs looked as fresh as always and very explosive behind the o-line. All it’s going to take is some more disciplined and consistent ball, and this offense should be a threat.

Hopefully Tomlin or Fautanu come back with some better news about his leg in the coming days. A long-term injury for Fautanu would be a complete blow for the Steelers’ new plan up front with him and the other young blockers.

Steelers Quarterback Justin Fields Threw The Ball Well, Making His Case For The Starting Job

While Fields’ night will probably be remembered for his two fumbles under center, he still looked a whole lot more comfortable in the pocket. Fields completed 5 out of 6 passes for 67 yards and no interceptions. He only accounted for 3 rushes for 2 yards and was taken down twice for sacks. Steeler Nation didn’t get to see the explosive run from him we were all waiting for, but that will hopefully come sooner rather than later in these next preseason games. Look out for Fields to keep making his case for the starting quarterback job in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers will be back in Latrobe for practice ahead of next Saturday’s matchup against the Buffalo Bills.
