Following the New York Giants’ preseason-opening win over the Detroit Lions, do they already have a quarterback controversy in town? New York entered this preseason with three quarterbacks on their roster, as Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito are competing for the backup spot behind Daniel Jones.
With the first game in the books, Brian Daboll may have a difficult decision to make with both Lock and DeVito. Lock struggled during his time on the field, as he completed just 4-of-10 passes for 17 yards and an ugly interception to boot. DeVito, though, looked sharp, as he passed for 92 yards on eight completions and led the Giants to both of their scoring drives.
Originally, the expectation was that NY would keep two QBs for the final roster and send DeVito the practice squad, which would run the risk of him still getting signed off of it by a new team. Now, however, might Daboll keep three QBs around?
Even though it was just a small sample size out of DeVito in the Giants win over the Lions, he still showed that the mini-run he had during the 2023 season was not a fluke. DeVito was only sacked twice, seemed very poised in the pocket and made some nice throws.
Despite signing Lock this offseason, there’s no reason to just send DeVito packing. Some even think the NJ product should be the QB2. Brian Daboll’s DeVito take after the game shows how much he values him too.

The kid known as Tommy Cutlets definitely helped himself out in a big way vs. the Lions. Is he going to start for the G-Men this fall? No, that’s Jones’ job moving forward. However, DeVito continues to prove he can be trusted if his number is called. At this point, it’s going to be a bit of a surprise if he does end up getting demoted to the practice squad. NY should find a way to keep him around.
