Stetson Bennett leads Rams to win despite 4 interceptions

The Los Angeles Rams took on the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday for their first preseason game of the season and while Sean McVay famously does not play his starters in the preseason there are plenty of players still attempting to find a roster spot. One of those players, Jordan Whittington, may have done just that after finishing with six catches and 74 yards receiving.

Stetson Bennett, on the other hand, did nothing to quell fans worries of the backup quarterback position after throwing four ugly interceptions despite leading LA down the field for a touchdown to win the game 13-12.

With Jimmy Garoppolo our for the first two games of the season Bennett will by default take the QB2 role, unless he doesn’t.

Here is how the rest of the game went.

First Quarter

Stetson Bennett’s first pass back in pads found rookie standout Jordan Whittington for a gain of 13-yards. Whittington would have another good gain later in the drive that saw the sixth round pick break a tackle and show off his speed with a 31-yard gain. After a missed opportunity in the red zone to Davis Allen, Joshua Karty’s 28-yard field goal was good.

LA’s first opportunity on defense was a mixed bag. Cooper Rush completed a 43-yard pass to Jalen Brooks on the third play of the drive but the Rams defense was able to hold the Cowboys to just a field goal. It wouldn’t take long for the Cowboys to get the ball back after Bennett’s second pass of the drive was intercepted by Markquese Bell.

Former San Francisco 49er Trey Lance took the field following the interception for the Cowboys and found some success with his legs on a 19-yard scramble. LA would have the last laugh on defense after forcing a turnover-on-downs at the 1-yard line.

Score: Rams 3, Cowboys 3

Second Quarter

On a 3rd-and-6 at his own 4-yard line, Bennett found Xavier Smith for a 10-yard gain and a 15-yard penalty tacked on for unnecessary roughness. Boston Scott was able to show of some toughness on the drive with a few hard runs down the middle but a near miss to Tyler Johnson in the corner of the endzone ended the drive and allowed Karty to hit his second field goal of the game.

Chris Shula’s second team defense was reminiscent of Raheem Morris’ bend-but-not-break scheme from year’s past. Rams defender Tyler Davis stood out with a tackle-for-loss early on the drive for a 2-yard loss but Lance was able to break containment on the next play to find David Duren for a 16-yard gain. Training camp standout Kamren Kinchens was able to break up a pass and a few incompletions later Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey found the uprights to tie the game.

Bennett found Whittington early on the next drive for a 6-yard gain and then again for a 14-yard catch.

When faced with a 4th-and-3 at the Dallas 34 yard line it would be the sixth rounder who would again be called upon with a 4-yard catch to convert. Whittington’s efforts would be short-lived after Bennett threw his second pick of the day to end the half.

Score: Rams 6, Cowboys 6

Third Quarter

The Cowboys first drive in the third quarter was much like the others—a few big plays before stalling out. Desjuan Johnson made a few impressive run-stuffing tackles and Jaylen McCollough had a big one-on-one tackle to save a first down. Lance could not connect to receiver Deontay Burnett on a 4th-and-6 leading to another turnover-on-downs for Dallas.

A would be 18-yard pass play to Whittington would be negated by a face mask called on Nikola Kalinic. Sam Wiglusz would convert on a long third down for a 16-yard gain but the drive would fizzle after a few short runs and an incomplete pass. It is worth noting Ethan Evans punt was nearly downed at the 1-yard line by Cameron McCutcheon but was called a touchback.

Following Aubrey’s missed 65-yard field goal attempt Bennett’s first throw of the drive was his third interception of the game.

Score: Rams 6, Cowboys 6

Fourth Quarter

The Cowboys third turnover-on-downs was caused by LA’s first sack of the game thanks to Rams linebacker Zach VanValkenburg.

An offensive holding penalty killed LA’s drive before it even started and lead to Evans second punt of the game which again should have been downed near the 1-yard line. Lance had his best string of completions of the game with just 9 minutes left with completions of 12, 12, and 26-yards. A Racey McMath drop at the first line marker in the redzone lead to the Cowboys third field goal of the game and gave Dallas the lead with just 6:12 to play.

Bennett’s comeback-from-behind drive began with a 24-yard pass play to Zach Evans out of the backfield and ended with yet another interception.

The Rams defense again continued to impress despite the offenses turnovers and held Dallas to yet another field goal to give Bennett another opportunity to drive down the field. After suffering a 5-yard penalty and another loss of nine due to a sack, Bennett connected with Miller Forristall for a gain of nine and was bailed out of his fifth interception thanks to a defensive holding penalty call that gave LA a first down.

A false start penalty wiped out a 5-yard gain on first down to set up a 2nd-and-10 but Bennett would find Wiglusz for a 10-yard gain and a new set of downs with a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty tacked on at the end. Scott found some room with a 7-yard run and Bennett would connect on two passes to get into the redzone. Drake Stoops took LA down to the 7-yard line with a 11-yard completion with just 26 seconds left to go. On 4th down Bennett found Forristall in the end zone for the only touchdown of the game and the win.

Final Score: Rams 13, Cowboys 12
