5 NY Jetѕ wһo could loѕe tһeіr jobѕ аfter 2024 NFL Drаft

The NY Jets have already made quite a few notable changes to their roster this offseason. They’ve completely revamped their offensive line, signed a new high-profile wide receiver, and traded for an All-Pro pass rusher.

Those moves have all improved the Jets’ roster, making the team even more primed for a potential Super Bowl run if all goes according to plan in 2024. Not everyone ends up a winner, though.

An influx of new talent means that some players on the roster will see their roles diminish heading into the 2024 season. The Jets aren’t done making changes, either.

The following five players could be in danger of losing their roles with the team if the Jets target their replacement later this month. Here are five players whose jobs are in jeopardy after the 2024 NFL Draft.

5. Chuck Clark, S, NY Jets
The Jets parted ways with starting safety Jordan Whitehead this offseason as the former Super Bowl champion returned to Tampa Bay in free agency, but one player the Jets did bring back is Chuck Clark.

Clark missed the entire 2023 season after tearing his ACL during OTAs, a devastating blow for a player who had never missed a game due to injury in his entire NFL career.

The Jets are banking on Clark returning to full health in 2024 and he’s currently penciled in as one of the team’s two starting safeties alongside Tony Adams, but with a cap hit of less than $2 million this season, he’s not guaranteed anything.

The 2024 draft isn’t exactly overflowing with safety talent, but there’s a chance the Jets use a Day 2 or 3 pick on another safety later this month. If that happens, Clark’s role as an every-down defensive starter could be in jeopardy.

4. Carter Warren, OT, NY Jets
It seemed like a formality for months that the Jets would use their first-round pick to address their offensive line. But following the additions of Tyron Smith, Morgan Moses, and John Simpson, that doesn’t seem so certain anymore.

The Jets have given themselves ample flexibility entering the draft, allowing the team to target a number of different positions. Offensive tackle is no longer the pressing need it was a month ago.

If the Jets were to use the 10th overall pick — or really any pick, for that matter — on a tackle, that player would likely be relegated to a backup role. That would be bad news for Carter Warren, who is tentatively penciled in as the team’s top backup tackle.

Warren was underwhelming in his five starts as a rookie, and it wouldn’t be wise for the Jets to go into the 2024 season with him as their top swing tackle on the bench. His role is in serious jeopardy entering the draft.

3. Israel Abanikanda, RB, NY Jets
Israel Abanikanda is in a similar position to his former college teammate, Carter Warren. Abanikanda was a Day 3 pick of the Jets in the 2023 NFL Draft and is currently penciled in as the top backup at his position.

That’s largely due to a lack of competition, however. Abanikanda is the current RB2 on the Jets’ roster, but he hasn’t done much to earn that role.

The 21-year-old was used sparingly as a rookie, finishing the year with just 70 yards on 22 carries on a lowly 3.2 yards per carry. The Jets didn’t trust Abanikanda as a blocker or pass protector, and he hardly maximized his limited snaps.

The Jets will add to their running back room at some point, quite possibly with a veteran signing. If not, the draft might be where they search for Abanikanda’s temporary replacement while he’s relegated to more of a change-of-pace RB3 role in 2024.

2. Tyler Conklin, TE, NY Jets
Tyler Conklin is a very good tight end and one of the most underrated players on the Jets’ roster. Conklin ranks top-10 in tight end receiving yards over the last two seasons and was genuinely one of the better players at his position in the NFL last year.

He’s on this list for one reason, however. That reason is Brock Bowers.

The standout Georgia tight end is widely seen as a potential top-15 pick in this year’s draft and remains one of the most likely targets for the Jets in the first round. Tight end isn’t necessarily a need for the Jets, but Bowers’ talent might be too much to pass on.

You could also include 2022 draft pick Jeremy Ruckert at this spot, seeing as he would be relegated to TE3 if the Jets drafted Bowers. Nonetheless, Conklin’s role as the Jets’ starter could be in danger if Bowers is on the board when his team picks later this month.

1. Allen Lazard, WR, NY Jets
The Jets signed Allen Lazard to a whopping four-year, $44 million contract last offseason, giving him the most overall and guaranteed money of any wide receiver in his free-agent class. It’s safe to say they regret that decision a year later.

Lazard was a disaster in his first season with the Jets, finishing with just 23 catches for 311 yards while finding himself as a healthy scratch on a number of occasions. While he’s technically still penciled in as the team’s WR3, that seems likely to change.

The Jets remain active in the free-agent wide receiver market and are expected to address the position in a loaded draft class this month. That could come as early as the first round.

Lazard should be better with Aaron Rodgers throwing him passes in 2024, but that doesn’t mean the Jets won’t search for his replacement in the draft. His status is far from secure.
