Browns named a possible landing spot for a former All-Pro linebacker that could compete for playing time

Cleveland Browns defense was one of the best in the NFL and they need to build off of that in 2024. In free agency, they lost some pieces, though none of them were major contributors.

The Browns signed two linebackers Jordan Hicks and Devin Bush and one national outlet believes that they may be adding another at the position in the form of a two-time All-Pro.

Bleacher Report named the Browns as a landing spot for free agent LB Shaquille Leonard and here is their reasoning:

“While Cleveland signed Jordan Hicks and Devin Bush to address its need at linebacker during free agency, it couldn’t hurt to add one more veteran who can compete for snaps in training camp. Leonard has battled injuries and said he’s contemplating retirement, but a situation where he’s either a rotational player or two-down defender while ring chasing could be a good fit.” – Matt Holder, Bleacher Report

The injuries have taken a beating to Leonard and the player he once was. Leonard was an All-Pro for three of his first four seasons in the NFL, then only played three games in 2022 because of a back injury. Leonard started the 2023 season with the Colts before being released and playing the final five games of the regular season with the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as a playoff game.

Leonard had 88 tackles and a sack during the 2023 season and can still provide a veteran linebacker presence that most teams covet. If the Browns were to bring in Leonard, it would be a one-year deal for the 28-year-old.

While there has been no connection known between the two sides, the Browns could still use linebacker depth behind Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Hicks, and Bush. Perhaps the Browns take a look at Leonard following the draft depending on how things shake out.
