Following Jordan Mailata’s contract extension, the Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly already trying to re-sign star receiver DeVonta Smith as well.

Could DeVonta Smith be the next impact player that the Philadelphia Eagles re-sign to a long-term contract extension?

According to a report from ESPN’s Tim McManus, the Eagles have opened discussions with the former first-round receiver and seemingly hope to make him one of the latest key players to receive an extension this offseason.

“The Eagles are making efforts behind the scenes to get something done with 25-year-old Smith,” McManus writes. “Contract talks are ongoing, sources familiar with negotiations said, and there’s general optimism that a deal will materialize in the near future.”

The Eagles haven’t been shy this offseason about making moves. First, they started with a shaking up of the coaching staff, as they brought in Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio as their offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively. Then, the Eagles signed starting offensive guard Landon Dickerson to an extension before making several additions in free agency.

Some of those free-agent additions included the homecoming of former Penn State star running back Saquon Barkley and the return of C.J. Gardner-Johnson for his second stint in Philadelphia.

Offensive tackle Jordan Mailata was their most recent player to receive an extension. They agreed to terms on a three-year, $66 million deal that locks him down as Jalen Hurts’ blindside protector.

Now, it looks like Smith is next in line to receive a new deal as he enters the final year of his four-year contract, although the Eagles also have the decision to use his fifth-year option, as is customary with all first-round picks. As things currently stand, Smith is set to count $6.4 million against the cap this coming season, as he’ll earn a base salary of over $1 million.

Considering Smith is coming off his second-straight 1,000-yard receiving season, it is hard to see a deal not getting done. Since joining the Eagles, the 26-year-old has proven to be one of their top play-makers, totaling 3,178 yards and 19 touchdowns, and has made 240 receptions in three seasons.

This past season, Smith finished second on the Eagles in receiving, recording 1,066 yards and seven scores. This placed him behind only A.J. Brown for the Eagles in receiving.

While the Eagles may close a deal with Smith soon, but they will have until May 2 to decide whether to use the fifth-year option, which will guarantee him $16 million, per OverTheCap.
