Despite being tight on cap space, the New York Jets have further ideas on how to improve their roster for the new season.

The New York Jets have filled almost all of their needs on the offensive side of the ball during the early onset of free agency. The offensive line has been retooled, a top receiver has been added, and Tyrod Taylor is now the backup quarterback in Florham Park.

There’s still one position that needs attention, however, and the Jets are taking their time with it.

Running back.

On a show with Will Parkinson this week, ESPN Reporter Rich Cimini stated that New York was still interested in acquiring a veteran running back to spell top player Breece Hall from time to time.

“‘The Jets will sign a veteran running back, you can count on that,’ Rich Cimini said on the show. ‘I’m just not sure when it’ll be.’

According to Over the Cap, New York has just under $1.5 million in cap space, but plenty of ways to add some more in the coming months. Restructured deals to Quinnen and Quincy Williams could open enough room to sign their draft class, but also to bring in a veteran running back.

For a player in Hall who is considered the bell cow of the offense, finding a player that can spell him for some plays is very important. New York thought they had it with Dalvin Cook but the former Viking struggled to be effective in minimal time.

There are still some competent free agent runners available that have plenty of tread on their tires. Former Baltimore Ravens running back JK Dobbins is coming off an Achilles injury, but has a personal relationship with Aaron Rodgers. Former All-Pro Ezekiel Elliott is also unsigned.

If the Jets are looking to add some veteran leadership to their running back room, there are still plenty of options for the organization to add cap space, and a player to their franchise.
