Bears News: Clarity on Nate Davis, Rome Odunze on punts, and more

Atlanta Falcons v Chicago Bears

Outside of announcing that Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams will indeed be playing against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, Matt Eberflus provided an update on the status of right guard Nate Davis.

Davis has been a source of frustration for many Bears fans. There continue to be signs to the outsider that the veteran offensive lineman does not have much of an interest in participating in Training Camp. What is curious about Eberflus revealing that Davis suffered a setback is that he seemingly called out his starting right guard on Wednesday.

Adding a layer to Davis’ lack of availability is that Ryan Bates is now shifting from center to right guard. Where that becomes potentially problematic for the Bears is that the team has seemingly been set on Bates opening the season as the starting center. If Bates is forced to start the season at right guard, Coleman Shelton will get the nod at center. While Shelton should be an upgrade at the center position for the Bears, it seems that the Bears are already behind the eight-ball in terms of a consistent offensive line.

Rome Odunze seeking out punt return opportunities.

Kay Adams of “The Up and Adams Show” was at Halas Hall on Thursday and among the guests she visited with was Matt Eberflus. In speaking with Adams, Eberflus revealed that it was Rome Odunze’s idea to be involved with punt returns.

Oduze had some experience returning punts in college, but given his ability to impact the game as a wide receiver, he was limited in terms of when he was used as a returner. It would seem that the Bears may have a similar approach this season, as even with DJ Moore and Keenan Allen, Odunze’s primary role on the Bears in his rookie season is as a wide receiver.

Nick Foles calls it a career.

Former Chicago Bears quarterback Nick Foles announced his retirement on Thursday.

While Foles will be remembered most for defeating Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles, Bears fans will always have the moment when he led the Bears to a comeback against the Atlanta Falcons after replacing Mitch Trubisky.

Anthony Miller finds a new home.

Hand up, we definitely thought Anthony Miller was going to be a household name with the Chicago Bears. Instead, he has quickly become another wide receiver who was good with a Bears’ team still in wide receive purgatory but hasn’t found succeess in the years since. In his latest attempt, Miller will be trying to make the Baltimore Ravens’ 53-man roster.
