The Chicago Bears are impressed with what they’re seeing from their 28-year-old journeyman quarterback.
Brett Rypien — who went undrafted out of Boise State in 2019 — has played for five different NFL teams, and it’s looking like the Bears will become the sixth.

Kevin Fishbain and Adam Jahns of The Athletic reported on Friday that Chicago wants Rypien on its roster, particularly for the value Rypien can provide as a mentor to Caleb Williams.
“I think the Bears would like to keep Brett Rypien around,” Jahns said.
“He showed during the Hall of Fame Game that he’s a capable backup, especially if he’s going to be the No. 3. His real value is in the quarterbacks room as a veteran sounding board for Williams and (Tyson) Bagent. Rypien has embraced that role, too.”
Rypien’s aforementioned performance during the Hall of Fame Game was so good that it even elicited reports that Rypien could challenge Bagent for Chicago’s QB2 job.
It seems like Rypien would be perfectly happy in whatever role the Bears require, so long as he makes the squad.
Rypien’s calm, easy-going demeanor on and off the field was showcased this week in Episode 1 of Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Chicago Bears.
He is the right personality to balance out all the hubbub and outside distractions sure to surround Chicago’s QB room this season, which must be why the Bears are intent on making him a permanent member of their locker room.
