The Denver Broncos have announced that they have placed offensive lineman Quinn Bailey on the season-ending injured reserve and signed rookie offensive lineman Oliver Jervis.
As we know, Bailey suffered a pretty devastating fractured ankle during yesterday’s practice. Trainers immediately rushed to him and placed him in an air cast and he was placed in an ambulance where he was taken to a local hospital to undergo surgery. This obviously ended his season and the Broncos made it official today when they placed him on the season-ending injured reserve.
The Denver Broncos were planning on having Bailey play a key role in their offense this upcoming season. After practice, head coach Sean Payton told reporters that Bailey was profiled as their 6th offensive lineman and someone who would come in on jumbo packages.
“We were just discussing the roster the other day and he was easily for us lineman [No.] 6 and someone who was going to be involved in the game plan in jumbo.”
Now, the Broncos need to start looking at their remaining depth to see who can replace him in that role, and that will be difficult. Bailey is a jack-of-all-trades type of reserve who can play all four offensive line spots if needed while also being their top swing tackle and jumbo package player. So, the pressure will be on the rest of the Broncos to step up and fill the role that he filled.
To fill his roster spot, the Broncos signed undrafted rookie offensive lineman Oliver Jervis. The former CSU offensive lineman started all 12 games for them at tackle and participated in the Broncos rookie minicamp earlier this offseason. He is a 6-5, 305-pound offensive lineman who will add some depth to the Broncos’ offensive tackle group.
His odds of making the Broncos 53-man roster are slim at best considering he is just signing with the team. However, in the next few weeks, he will have a chance to impress the Broncos coaches and compete with the other depth players for a spot on their practice squad.
