Commanders rookie backs up big talk in first preseason game

As the third of Washington’s three second-round picks in 2024, Ben Sinnott received less attention than some selections but the rookie tight end stood out in the team’s first preseason game … just like he said he would.

“The amount of things I can do is unlimited.” Sinnott told team reporters. “With my alignments, with what K-State trusted me with. I think Coach [Kliff] Kingsbury’s going to have a lot of fun with what he can do and with where he can put me.”

When asked what he brings to the table for the Washington franchise, the 22-year-old tight end was just as confident.

“I just think first a weapon that is going to make plays every time he touches the ball,” Sinnott said. “One that’s going to do what he needs to do in the run game and be that big athlete and create mismatches in the pass game.”

Fast forward to Saturday’s preseason game against the Jets. With just over three minutes left in the first half of a tie game, Sinnott found a seam down the middle for a 44-yard catch and run while breaking several tackles along the way.

Sinnott lined up in the slot and split out wide for for 1,138 yards and 10 scores in three years with Kansas State but he also played fullback for the Wildcats, finishing as the Big 12 coaches’ all-conference selection at fullback each of his last two seasons,

That would explain the number of Jets defenders it took to bring him down. Sinnott finished the game with three catches on three targets for a team-high 57 yards.

He could split reps with veteran tight end Zach Ertz against the Dolphins next weekend, but he surely climbed the depth chart with his first preseason performance.
