Cubs Forced to Create Their Own Fireworks on Opening Day

The Chicago Cubs hosted the Colorado Rockies for their home opener on Monday afternoon. There are few things like Wrigley Field in April when optimism is high and the hot cocoa vendors stay extremely busy. This season the team attempted to interject a little showmanship into the pregame introductions. Which led to this, and it cannot have been what they were going for.

Yet even the strongest pyrotechnic critics would have to agree that the Cubs came out and played inspired baseball. Shota Imanaga twirled six innings of two-hit ball in his major league debut, and the hometown offense manufactured five runs out of nine singles to leave everyone in the bleachers satisfied with a 5-0 win. So maybe they should shoot these things off before every game. It’s certainly safe.

The Cubs and Rockies are back in action tonight in the second game of their series. New Chicago manager Craig Counsell won’t be caught off guard this time.
