The Dodgers announced they have designated Cavan Biggio for assignment to make room for Freddie Freeman, who was activated from the family emergency list Monday.

Biggio, 29, had been the Dodgers’ primary first baseman while Freeman stepped away from the team to be with his family. Freeman’s son, Maximus, was hospitalized July 26, while the Dodgers visited the Astros in Houston, Texas.

Freeman did not return for 10 days, but is in the lineup Monday night against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Biggio played 30 games after he was acquired in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays on June 12. He slashed .192/.306/.329 and saw time at four positions.

The son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, Cavan Biggio had spent his entire professional career with the Toronto organization prior to the trade. He was a fifth-round pick out of the University of Notre Dame in the 2016 draft.

If the Dodgers did not cut ties with Biggio Monday, the move seemed inevitable. In addition to Freeman, the Dogders are set to welcome back Miguel Rojas off the injured list in the days to come.

In addition, infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman is set to return from the injured list himself in August. Mookie Betts and Max Muncy could return in some order.

Against this backdrop, Biggio is merely the first domino to fall in what should be a series of moves that will reshape the Dodgers’ active roster this month.

Biggio hit three home runs and drove in 10 as a Dodger, after hitting two homers and driving in nine in 44 games with Toronto prior to being designated for assignment.

Biggio collected downballot Rookie of the Year votes in 2019, when he hit 16 homers and drove in 48 runs as the primary second baseman on a young Blue Jays squad.
