Eagles kick veteran to curb just days after they signed him

The Philadelphia Eagles moved on from linebacker Shaquille Quarterman on Sunday morning, just a few days after signing him to a one-year deal.

Quarterman, a product of the Miami Hurricanes, was originally a 2020 fourth-round pick (No. 140 overall) by the Jacksonville Jaguars. In four seasons with the Jags, he appeared in 65 games without making one start, though he was a major special teams contributor where a majority of his snaps came from.

In a corresponding move, the Eagles signed safety Caden Sterns.

The decision comes after Eagles’ starter C.J. Gardner-Chauncey injured his should during training camp earlier this week.

Vic Fangio is Familiar with the Eagles’ Latest Signing
Sterns, a former fifth-round pick out of Texas by the Denver Broncos in 2021, has not stepped foot on the football field since he suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee in Week 1 of last season.

The Broncos released Sterns earlier this week and he was picked up by the Carolina Panthers, which didn’t last long due to a failed physical.

In Philly, the Birds are giving Sterns more time to get back to himself and will give him a “ramp-up” period before letting him practice in full.

That could be because the Eagles are more familiar with his game since defensive coordinator Vic Fangio coached him as a rookie.

This “ramp-up” period will last about a week, per Fangio.

“He’s only played (six) games the last two years, I don’t believe you’ll see him out here on the practice field at least for a week or so,” Fangio said on Sunday. “So we need to see where he is physically, how he’s moving around, and then go from there.”

Before coming to Philly, Sterns appeared in 20 games for the Broncos, racking up 49 tackles and four interceptions.

“He was a good player,” Fangio said. “Moved well, had good instincts, good ball skills, had a good feel for the game. We just need to see where he’s at physically.”
