The 49ers released signed defensive lineman Jonathan Garvin and punter Pressley Harvin III in the corresponding moves. Thomas signed with the 49ers ahead of summer break, after the team failed to swipe current Lions tight end Brock Wright away in restricted free agency.

The former Virginia Tech quarterback spent one season with the Lions, early in his position switch to tight end, catching 16 balls for 173 yards and one touchdown. He played his best ball with the Washington Commanders, securing 184 passes for 1,685 yards and 14 scores across 52 games and four seasons with Washington.
