The Denver Broncos aren’t betting on Zach Wilson to be their long-term starting quarterback.
Since trading for the New York Jets’ second overall pick from 2021, the Broncos have drafted Oregon quarterback Bo Nix with the No. 12 pick in last week’s draft, and on Tuesday, declined Wilson’s fifth-year option, according to ESPN.
The decision will save Denver $22.4 million, and it will allow the Broncos to move on from Wilson sooner if he doesn’t succeed. According to ESPN, the Jets and Broncos will split the $5.5 million guaranteed to Wilson in the final year of his rookie deal.
The Jets traded Wilson this offseason for a late-draft pick swap after three years in which he failed to become the team’s franchise quarterback. Wilson threw 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in 34 games in New York. He had a 12-21 record.
After the Jets traded for Aaron Rodgers to replace him last offseason, the Broncos’ actions make it clear they don’t think Wilson is their future either.
