Former Maryland football star DJ Moore inks massive extension, makes NFL history

The Chicago Bears and DJ Moore have agreed on a four-year, $110 million extension that includes $82.6 million guaranteed, ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Tuesday evening. Moore, who is entering his seventh professional season, becomes the first player in NFL history to have the first 10 years of his NFL career guaranteed. After inking the largest deal in Bears history, he is now tied to the franchise through the 2029 season.

Moore, 27, had a career season last fall. He had 96 catches for 1,364 yards and eight touchdowns, three career-high marks. It was his fourth 1,000-yard receiving season, with the other three coming in 2019, 2020 and 2021 with the Carolina Panthers. The Philadelphia native is still looking for both his first Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections.

The Panthers drafted Moore with the No. 24 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and he quickly became a star wideout. Carolina exercised his fifth-year rookie option ahead of the 2021 season, though it ultimately signed Moore to a three-year, $61.9 million extension in 2022. Ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Panthers traded Moore, the ninth overall pick and their 2024 first-round pick (which eventually became this year’s No. 1 pick, Caleb Williams) as part of a package for the No. 1 pick (Bryce Young).

While Moore had success with quarterback Justin Fields, now with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he will now form what should be an electric duo with Williams. Williams, the Washington, D.C., native and former Maryland target, has a bonafide No. 1 target in the former Terps star.

Moore had a strong three years at Maryland, culminating in an All-Big Ten first-team selection and Big Ten Receiver of the Year honors in 2017. He caught 80 passes for 1,033 yards and eight touchdowns for the Terps in D.J. Durkin’s second and final season.
