Jordan Love takes three plays to prove why he’s the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback

Jordan Love to Dontayvion Wicks is going to be a problem.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love

Remember when Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings fans said Jordan Love was being paid after eight good games?

He had the perfect response. It took only three plays of the preseason to remind everyone why he became the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. Love picked apart the Cleveland Browns’ defense with a beautiful 65-yard touchdown pass to Dontayvion Wicks.

Love had good protection, waited for the right moment, and hit a perfect pass into the bucket to Wicks, who was wide open. Of course he was.

The Green Bay Packers took an early 7-0 lead in their preseason opener. The outcome of these exhibition contests doesn’t matter, but watching Love show regular-season form is what we all wanted to see.

Here is the play:

Jordan Love kicks off the Packers preseason in the best way possible

Love is on a mission to prove last season wasn’t a fluke. Packers fans know it already, but it may take the rest of the NFC North time to admit it.

And that was Love’s day done. Matt LaFleur said he wasn’t sure how many snaps the starters would play and that it would come down to a feel for the game.

LaFleur had seen enough. Love threw two passes, completing both for 63 yards, one touchdown, and a perfect 158.3 passer rating. Enter Sean Clifford. Talk about a mic-drop moment for the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

It’s important not to overreact from one preseason possession (we absolutely are), but it’s a nice reminder of how special the Love-to-Wicks connection can become. Wicks also deserves a ton of credit. He beat his defender comfortably, gained separation, and made the play. He has star potential.

With Love out of the game, the focus shifts to the backup quarterback competition between Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt.
