There has been no shortage of reporting on the quarterback competition playing out at Raiders training camp, but this week we got a perspective from someone actually employed by the team.
JT The Brick has been following the team since the start of camp and, like everyone else who has been covering the competition between Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew, he hasn’t been overly impressed to this point.
Additionally, JT says his outlook on the Raiders quarterback situation has changed a little in recent days.
“This is now go time for the quarterbacks and the quarterbacks have not taken advantage of that opportunity. Period. They just haven’t been able to do that,” JT said on Wednesday during his weekday Raider Nation Radio program.
“I’ve always thought that Aidan O’Connell would probably win this job. I no longer think that. I’m not saying he’s going to lose the job. I’m not going to sit here today, August 6th, and tell you who is going to be the starting quarterback, but I think Gardner Minshew has the edge, and I think most of the insiders think that [he] has the edge for this opportunity. And if you look at the schedule, opening up against Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack, and then playing the Baltimore defense, I think you want a mobile quarterback with experience those first two games.”
JT said he isn’t making predictions this early in the process, but he also mentioned a scenario that seems to be getting more and more likely as the season gets closer.
Could the Raiders end up with a quarterback carousel that carries into the regular season?
“I always thought Aidan O’Connell would be it,” JT continued. “He would earn the position. He would earn the starting position, and he would open up, and if he went 1-1 he’d keep the job and if he went 0-2, he’d lose the job. Whatever is going to happen is going to happen… but I’m starting to sense that Gardnew Minshew might be the player after what I saw in extensive practice here in camp… and if I’m wrong with that, you know where to find me. This isn’t end of the world radio stuff.”
There is still time for someone to seize the job at quarterback (32 days to be exact), and the hope is that one of the quarterbacks will get comfortable in Luke Getsy’s offense and shine in the preseason.
Preseason for the Raiders kicks off on Saturday in Minnesota and head coach Antonio Pierce has said that each quarterback will get a “legit quarter” of playing time against the Vikings.
