Kansas City Chiefs’ Andy Reid Breaks Silence on Signing Marquise Brown

The Kansas City Chiefs walked away as big winners in the wide receiver market during free agency, adding Marquise Brown into Patrick Mahomes‘ arsenal, and it’s safe to say head coach Andy Reid is excited to get him in the building.

After a 2023 season that saw Chiefs wide receivers lead the league in dropped passes, as the franchise won a second consecutive Super Bowl in spite of the unit underperforming, Reid and Mahomes now add a game-changing talent into one of the league’s most prolific offenses.

How Andy Reid Plans to Use Marquise Brown

Brown arrives in Kansas City and will likely immediately ascend to the top of the Chiefs’ depth chart and potentially become Mahomes’ favorite target, at least his favorite target not named Travis Kelce.

For Reid, adding Brown throws the offensive playbook wide open.

“Marquise gives you that speed element on the outside, or inside for that matter,” Reid told reporters during the NFL Annual Meeting. “He’s played all the different spots. He’s a smart kid. He’s had some productive years so I invite that in.

“You have that guy who can take the top off [the defense] and track the ball well. But his short and intermediate games are good, too. He’s played inside and he’s played outside. He’s flexible that way so we’ll be able to move him around a little bit.”

Last season, Brown caught 51 passes for 574 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games. While Brown has only surpassed 1,000 receiving yards once in his career, back in 2021 with the Baltimore Ravens, moving into Mahomes’ receiving corps gives him the potential to significantly elevate his game and production.

Will Kansas City Chiefs Still Draft a WR?

Even after signing Brown, the Chiefs might not be done adding at receiver.

Given Kadarius Toney continuing to disappoint, and the uncertainty surrounding Rashee Rice’s availability, the Chiefs could look to target a wide receiver early in this month’s draft.

If Texas speedster Xavier Worthy somehow slides down the board , he could be an ideal fit and name to watch for Kansas City. Likewise, Georgia’s Ladd McConkey could be a perfect scheme fit due to his versatility of producing from the slot or when lined up on the perimeter.

The Chiefs’ receiving corps, thanks to Brown’s addition and a potential incoming rookie, is bound to look significantly different this fall.
