The tough thing about holding your new uniforms for an unveiling is keeping all the third-party corporate partners in line with the launch, when there's so little oversight with those. The Lions had been wearing the previous version of their uniforms for the seven seasons and decided it was time for a change. The new uniforms pay homage to the ones worn by the team in the 1990s. They have similar block-style font and large numbers on the jerseys. The home Honolulu Blue jersey returned to white letters for player names and white numbers trimmed in silver. The white away jersey has the traditional Honolulu Blue letters and numbers in the new font. A noticeable difference between the 90’s version of the jerseys is that the top had three sleeve stripes, and the new ones have two. Gone are the William Clay Ford WCF and Lions wordmark on the sleeves.
The silver pants still have Honolulu blue stripes but now have white trim. The silver stripes are not on the new Honolulu blue pants. The white pants remain for an alternative look to the away uniform from previous years. The Detroit Lions updated their helmet with white stripes between the Honolulu blue ones and returned the Honolulu blue face mask they wore in previous years. The William Clay Ford WCF tribute is now a decal on the back of the helmets.
The Motor City Muscle uniforms were the star of the reveal. The Lions returned to a Black uniform. The jersey has Honolulu blue numbers with a silver outline and the player’s name is silver on the back. This version is worn with an all-black or Honolulu blue pants. The Lions added a Honolulu blue helmet to the uniform with a black Lion decal and black face mask. It is a considerable upgrade to the all-gray alternate uniform.
The Detroit Lions new uniforms are clean and sleek and pay homage to the past while still maintaining a modern look. A new look for a new era in Lions football.
