The New York Jets hosted five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Jarvis Landry for a workout Thursday.
The workout marked the second time the Jets have seen Landry this offseason. Landry participated in the Jacksonville Jaguars minicamp earlier this offseason.
The New York Jets have not signed WR Jarvis Landry
Despite hosting him twice this offseason, the Jets have yet to give Landry a spot on their team. Landry did not play at all in 2023 after coming off of the least productive season of his career in 2022.
Landry, who played for the New Orleans Saints in 2022, only played in nine games en route to a 25-reception season. Landry amassed just under 300 yards receiving and had one receiving touchdown in 2022.
Landry’s 2022 season was even more disappointing than it appears on the surface. Landry’s debut with the team saw him haul in seven catches for 114 yards, meaning he averaged under 20 receiving yards per game in the other eight games in which he played.
Jarvis Landry racked up multiple 1,000-yard seasons
Since being drafted in the second round by the Miami Dolphins in the 2014 NFL Draft, Landry has managed to rack up multiple seasons with over 1,000 yards receiving.
Landry even led the NFL in receptions during the 2017 season with 112 receptions. Now that Landry is 31-years-old and one year removed from the NFL, he is struggling to find a spot on an NFL team.
His most recent season with over 1,000 yards came when he was with the Cleveland Browns in 2019. Landry amassed 1,174 yards receiving and six touchdowns on 83 receptions that season.
While he hasn’t reached the 1,000-yard mark since then, Landry still managed to come close with 840 yards receiving in 2020. His final year in Cleveland, 2021, saw him accrue just under 600 yards receiving.
Do the New York Jets need Jarvis Landry?
Landry said in an article from the Associated Press that being out of football was hard for him. The five-time Pro Bowl selection didn’t want to end his career with what he considered his worst season.
“We’ve got another day. We’ve got another day,” he said. “I just want to be as clean as possible, be the best teammate I could possibly be and let everything else play out how it does.”
“Just (wanted to see) if I could really do it, if I still really want to do it and pushing myself to those limits,” Landry said. “Being out of football last year was very tough. It made me grounded, but it also made me humble and grateful to have opportunities, even like this.
“This is a good stepping stone toward the next chapter of what I’m looking for.
“That’s a fair question,” he said. “The competitor in me says no. But, again, whatever is in God’s plans and his cards, I just kind of rock with that, you know what I mean?”
Is Landry’s inspired comeback enough to find him a spot on the Jets? The Jets are top-heavy at the WR position, but they lack depth. Newly acquired WR Mike Williams and young star WR Garrett Wilson are the two standouts.
After Wilson and Williams, Xavier Gipson, Allen Lazard and rookie WR Malachi Corley outline the part of the group that will likely see the field. After those five guys, there are a lot of spots that Landry certainly has the ability to fill. None of the other receivers on the depth chart have the veteran presence that Landry could bring, which could be what lands him a spot in New York.
Regardless of the veteran presence Landry could bring, Jets fans are begging their organization to stay away from the WR they view as past his prime.
