NY Giants may be shopping for short-term QB after Drew Lock injury update

Late in the first quarter of the showdown between the NY Giants and Detroit Lions, there was plenty of worry for Brian Daboll when backup quarterback Drew Lock went down on the turf. Lock was diagnosed with a hip injury, but Joe Schoen said his signal-caller could have gone back in the game if needed.

However, it looks like things aren’t as minor as originally expected. According to insider Ian Rapoport, Lock suffered a bone contusion and strained oblique. The good news is that Lock doesn’t need surgery, but the bad news is he’s going to be out for a little while. Because of that, the Giants might need to bring in a new QB to help out for the rest of the preseason:

Daniel Jones should get the start in preseason Week 2, with the G-Men set to take on the Texans in Houston. Jones could play just the first quarter, or maybe Daboll will let him play the entire first half before shutting him down until the start of the regular season.

Second-year QB Tommy DeVito will also see a ton of playing time vs. the Texans, but NY will not be able to rely on Lock. Though the former Seahawk struggled against the Lions, going 4-of-10 with an interception, no one is going to just write him off after one bad quarter. The hope was to see plenty of him throughout the summer.

He should be ready to be the No. 2 option (unless DeVito wins the job) by the time Week 1 gets here, but another body is definitely needed for the QBs room until then. Who could the Giants look to add? Ryan Tannehill has been floated around as a potential signing, but he’s probably going to be too expensive for what Daboll and Schoen are looking for. A younger quarterback at an affordable price would make way more sense for the front office to go after.
