The second-year edge rusher spoke about getting stronger and being ready to contribute to the team in 2024
The New York Jets’ 2023 first-round pick is ready to take a step forward in 2024.
During his media availability, Will McDonald spoke about getting stronger and his readiness to contribute to the Jets’ defense.
“I feel like I’ve gotten stronger in the run game. You know, I’ve been able to get knocked back. Now, I’m just setting that edge so I can help defending on the other side, you know, in the backfield,” McDonald said. “I definitely feel like I’ve gotten stronger in every aspect, rather just pass rush. Stronger in the run defense, keying the ball, and doing what I need to do.”
McDonald also spoke about how his second training camp has been so far.
“Been going great so far. I’m still making plays, taking care of my business, continuing to get stronger for my team so I can play this role as best as I can… My D-line is definitely helping me out with a lot too.”
This echoes what head coach Robert Saleh has proclaimed about McDonald. He said that while McDonald’s weight is similar, he added strength during the offseason. His next step, according to Saleh, is to add a power rush to his repertoire.
Linebacker C.J. Mosley elaborated on McDonald’s progress in an interview with the Up & Adams Show.
“I size him up by the way he sets the edges, especially in the run game. Teams look at him and think he’s a smaller edge rusher, but he’s a very powerful young guy,” Mosley commented. “He’s been doing a great job setting his edges in the run game, not letting people getting outside him, and in the pass game he’s one of the best. I’m not going to tell all his moves, but he can get to the quarterback any way he wants.”
For the Jets to be at their best on defense in 2024, they will need McDonald to step up. Haason Reddick will be the starter when he returns to the team, but McDonald will likely play a big role. He will need to fulfill his potential as a pass rusher and not be a complete liability in the run game.
If his work and improvement over the offseason translate to the field, McDonald will be able to capitalize on his opportunity and help keep the Jets’ defense dominant.
