Wide receiver Marquise Brown was hospitalized after suffering a dislocation of the sternoclavicular shoulder joint during the Kansas City Chiefs’ preseason opener.

Brown sustained the problem after catching a pass from Patrick Mahomes for an 11-yard gain on the first play of the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday. The 27-year-old was tackled and driven to the turf by Jaguars cornerback Montaric Brown, landing heavily on his left shoulder.

He immediately went to the sideline to be examined and treated by the medical team before he was taken down the tunnel. He was later discharged from hospital, but missed the team’s flight back to Kansas City after the game.

Head coach Andy Reid confirmed the injury to ‘Hollywood’ is similar to the problem that Tyreek Hill suffered in the 2019 season, forcing him to miss four games.

“As far as the injuries go, Hollywood Brown has that same thing that Tyreek had down here, actually,” Reid said. “Sternoclavicular post dislocation. They’ve taken him to the hospital. They’ll check him out, and they’re working on that as we speak. I think he’ll miss some time. We’ll just see where it’s at, I mean, I said that they’re kind of going through it right now and we’ll know more later on.”

Brown only arrived at the Chiefs in the summer as one of their biggest free-agent signings. He is expected to improve the team’s wide receiving play, alongside first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy, after taking 51 catches for 574 yards and four touchdowns for the Arizona Cardinals last season.

The Chiefs suffered a 26-13 loss against the Jaguars on a disappointing day that was topped off by the injury to Brown. Jaguars led 20-10 by the end of the second quarter, with the Chiefs failing to register a score in the third quarter, only tying the fourth 3-3. Carson Steele scored the only touchdown of the contest for the Chiefs while Louis Rees-Zammit played his first NFL game across four different positions after making the career switch from rugby union.

Reid spoke about Rees-Zammit’s performance and touched on his familiarity with the sport. “He was introduced to this when he was young when his dad played for six years in the European league,” Reid explained. “

He’s somewhat familiar with the sport and has had success in rugby. And there are some similarities there as a contact sport, and he’s had the ball and does those things and runs with the ball. We’ll start him off at the running back position and get him to feel comfortable with that.”

Brown was a first-round draft selection by the Baltimore Ravens in 2019 after playing colligatively in Oklahoma. He shone as a deep threat and put up a 1,000-yard season in 2021 before he was traded to the Cardinals the following year. ‘Hollywood’ endured injuries to himself and quarterback Kyler Murray, who tore his ACL against the New England Patriots in 2022
