Tyree Wilson might be off to a relatively slow start to training camp, but it sounds like he gained a little positive momentum during Saturday’s scrimmage that was open to members of the media.
“Tyree Wilson did not have a good night. He had a great night,” Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast. “[He] was extremely impressive. It was great watching him… everything that you wanted to see from Tyree was tonight.”
The following day on his podcast, Hondo added that the team has been pleased with Wilson’s progress and are taking a patient approach to his development in his second NFL season.
“I’m giving you what I’m hearing from the decisions maker and the people whose voice really matters,” Hondo added. “I’m telling you there is zero panic in the building on Tyree. It’s being approached as ‘OK, this is a rookie year, he’s finally healthy, let’s go.’ I thought the scrimmage was the best I had seen him in camp. I’m not going to pretend that he has lit the world on fire, but he’s also behind some great players.”
The other detail to remember on Wilson is that from the standpoint of technique, he was one of the rawest prospects the draft has seen in recent years – especially at his position.
And speaking of his position, it sounds like Wilson is moving towards another season where the Raiders will move him around a lot. Maxx Crosby is arguably the best defensive player in the NFL and with the emergence of Malcolm Koonce, there might not be a lot of EDGE opportunities for Wilson on passing downs.
Looking back to Wilson’s profile as a draft prospect, there were more than a few who compared him to Jaguars’ defensive end Travon Walker, who was the first overall pick in the 2022 draft.
Like Wilson, Walker finished his rookie year with 3.5 sacks but saw his sack total rise to 10 in his second season. Wilson is entering his second season, and you can be sure the Raiders would take 10 sacks from him as part of one of the most talented defensive line groups in the league.
