There is an issue starting for the Seattle Seahawks. That issue is at the most pivotal position with the quarterback spot as Geno Smith has missed practices to start training camp with injuries. For Mike Macdonald’s first season, they need to get a stable quarterback under center and one that will be with them for the long term. With all the speculation of who they could possibly add to the room, a dual trade could come about. That trade being Smith going to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for Michael Penix Jr.
This is a quarterback that the Seahawks were heavily linked to during the pre-draft process in Penix due to him coming from the Washington Huskies program. The Seahawks just so happen to have Ryan Grubb as their new offensive coordinator under Mike Macdonald. Grubb was the offensive coordinator for the Huskies for the last two seasons.
With a new head coach in Macdonald, the Seahawks getting Penix would complete a retool on offense with getting younger at the position and avoid any nagging injury issues with Smith. With Grubb, it would be an easy transition for Penix to make an immediate impact. Throughout college, Penix had accumulated 13,727 yards and 96 touchdowns, with 67 touchdowns and 9,547 yards coming in those two seasons under Grubb. With an offense featuring DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Penix would make an immediate impact with his arm talent.
For the Falcons, this helps them out. While Penix was drafted high, with Kirk Cousins under contract it was likely Penix wouldn’t see the field as a starter until he was 28. This allows Atlanta to pull a move where they get a stable quarterback to help out the room in case Cousins isn’t fully healthy, and can get draft capital back to acquire their actual future franchise quarterback.
