The Bachelorette: Devin Strader Being A Front-Runner Proves The Show Doesn’t Care About Lead

The Bachelorette season 21’s lead Jenn Tran has some contestants vying for her affection ready to take the next steps in their relationship, but Bachelorette villain Devin Strader being one of her front-runners proves the show doesn’t care about her at all. Throughout The Bachelorette season 21, Jenn has been investing in the guys who are piquing her interest, but the lead’s group of front-runners aren’t all the type of guys viewers hope to see win her heart. Jenn, who was introduced on The Bachelor season 28 where she won the hearts of Bachelor Nation, has a few concerning contestants.

The Bachelorette: Devin Strader Being A Front-Runner Proves The Show Doesn't Care About Lead

While there have been some wonderful guys who have invested in Jenn’s season and hope to get to the end successfully to build a genuine relationship with the lead, others simply aren’t the right fit for her. With Sam Nejad having been a walking red flag throughout his time on the series, one of the contestants who clearly didn’t fit is gone, but a few remain and seem to be going strong on The Bachelorette. While villains tend to stick around for the majority of the season, Bachelorette villain Devin even being cast on the show feels like too much.

Devin Has An Interesting Background

Devin’s time on The Bachelorette season 21 has primarily presented him as the villain of the season despite being somewhat charming, but after looking at his social media accounts, it’s clear that Devin and Jenn wouldn’t get along. According to some sleuths on Reddit, many of Devin’s likes on Instagram come from accounts that are predominantly against vaccination, immigration, and LGBTQIA+ issues. Devin’s likes run the gamut of minor jokes about Colin Kaepernick to full-blown conspiracy theories that are incredibly off-putting. While his social media likely doesn’t reveal the whole picture, the likes would be problematic for someone like Jenn.

While Jenn’s beliefs aren’t quite as public, what Bachelor Nation knows about her life makes it clear that her beliefs wouldn’t align with Devin’s. Jenn, the first Asian American lead of The Bachelorette, is highly unlikely to be against immigration, has openly supported LGBTQIA+ causes in the past, and considering she’s hoping to become a physician assistant in the future, is likely for vaccines rather than against them. Bachelorette producers knew about Devin’s beliefs, considering his social media profiles are accessible, and chose to bring him into the fold for the sake of drama, once again putting the show first.

Devin Still Causes Drama In The Group

He Stirs Up Drama

While Devin hasn’t been as heavily featured in the most recent episodes of The Bachelorette, it’s clear that he’s happy to stir up drama within the rest of the group for screentime. Creating conflict between the rest of the contestants isn’t a new tactic, but it’s rarely one that’s worked out for the singles on The Bachelor and The BacheloretteWhile it’s sometimes necessary to call one of the other contestants out on their behavior, Devin’s been making waves from early on in the season in a maddening, unnecessary way. Devin’s behavior has been difficult, clearly done to stir trouble.

Throughout The Bachelorette season 21Devin has been the least respectful of the rest of the guys on the series. While he’s earned time with Jenn on several occasions, it’s clear the amount of time he’s been getting with the lead doesn’t feel like enough for him. Instead of trying to find another way to talk to Jenn, he’s been disrespectful to others like former front-runner Aaron Erb and Thomas Nguyen, interrupting their time and cutting in front of them to talk to Jenn frequently. Rather than being respectful of the process, Devin has been more interested in creating drama.

Devin Could Be Trying To Use Jenn For Clout

He’s There For The Wrong Reasons

While Devin’s time on The Bachelorette has seemed to be more focused on getting to know the lead, his penchant for causing drama has made some wonder if he’s a clout chaser. Though Devin has been working hard to take time away from other guys on the show to get to know Jenn better, this could be a tactic to get him more screen time than the rest of the cast. Devin’s motives could be pure, but with the rest of the evidence stacked against him that points to his villainous nature, his being a clout chaser would be unsurprising.

Regardless of Devin’s behavior outside of The Bachelorette season 21, his performance on the show has led many to wonder if he’s simply looking for clout during his time on the series. Devin has frequently been the guy to interrupt other contestants’ time with Jenn, making it clear he wants airtime on the ABC series. Though he may have been angling to find out more about Jenn, his behavior has been something Bachelor Nation fans recognize. Rather than thinking the best of Devin, it feels far more likely that he’s been working hard to gain notoriety while on The Bachelorette.

Producers Are Clearly Still Having Trouble With The Vetting Process

They’re Not Looking Closely Enough

While Devin’s appearance on The Bachelorette season 21 isn’t surprising, it is disappointing to consistently see contestants on the series who vehemently wouldn’t work with the lead outside of the show. Despite having seen the issue crop up more than once, most recently with The Bachelorette season 19’s Gabby Windey and her ex-fiance Erich Schwer who notoriously got caught in a racially insensitive scandal, Bachelor Nation producers and casting team members don’t seem to make changes in their processes from season to season. With Devin outwardly against many of the things Jenn believes in, it’s disheartening he’s on her season.

The Bachelorette season 21 has faced similar issues to previous seasons in looking for interesting contestants who have the potential to cause drama, rather than looking for people who would be interested in a long-term relationship with the lead. Under the guise of looking for love, many potential clout chasers apply for the franchise and hope they’ll be selected to get their 15 minutes of fame. Instead of looking out for their leads like Jenn, The Bachelorette producers try to make interesting TV. Even knowing they could do so without sacrificing their integrity, the producers typically opt for stunt casting.
