The Bachelorette season 21 contestant Thomas Nguyen revealed that he’s been the victim of online hate, including racist comments, after the show portrayed him as one of the villains of Jenn Tran’s season, proving that the producers don’t really care about the contestants, but instead want to create drama. Thomas and Jenn shared a connection during The Bachelorette season 21 premiere night when they bonded about their Vietnamese heritage. Although Jenn was the first Asian American Bachelor franchise lead, Thomas was the only fully Asian man in her cast.
“Over the last 5 weeks I’ve gotten racial slurs, go kill yourself, I hope you die and every other hateful message in between based off a character yall saw for 10 minutes about over 5 weeks.”
In an Instagram post following his elimination from The Bachelorette season 21, Thomas revealed that he’d been the victim of online hate, including racial slurs.
This comes after The Bachelor season 28 aired a special segment during the “Women Tell All” episode when Rachel Nance tearfully shared the racist messages that she’d received during her time on the show. Thomas wrote, “Over the last 5 weeks I’ve gotten racial slurs, go kill yourself, I hope you die and every other hateful message in between based off a character yall saw for 10 minutes about over 5 weeks.”
The Bachelor Turned Thomas Nguyen Into A Villain “Character”
Thomas Was At The Center Of Many Conflicts
Thomas’ statement that the hate was based off of a “character” that the show created is interesting. He was often seen exploding in anger at his fellow contestants such as Devin Strader and Sam Nejad, especially when he felt that they were being disrespectful by stealing Jenn away. Thomas seems to be implying that some of that drama wasn’t as real as it looked because he said, “I also got soooo much love and support from yall too and that means so much to me and my family that you can see through this.”
Thomas’ last comment implies that The Bachelorette season 21 producers created a character for him based on his worst moments, which he thinks that fans should’ve been able to see through. It was very convenient that Sam N. interrupted Thomas when he was having a heart-to-heart conversation with Jenn about his family. If the producers manipulated that argument by encouraging Sam N. to steal Jenn away at that moment, it proves that they don’t care about pushing contestants such as Thomas to the brink in order to create a dramatic moment. It’s despicable, and it must stop.
It’s interesting to see that Thomas seems to be accusing the Bachelorette producers of creating a character for him. No matter what the circumstances surrounding Thomas’ angry outbursts were, there’s absolutely no excuse for Bachelorette fans to direct hate at anyone, especially based on their race. Jenn made history as the first Asian American Bachelor franchise lead, so it’s very disheartening to see that people are still sending racist messages, especially after Rachel’s experience in Joey Graziadei’s season. Bachelor Nation must unite against such awful hate speech. Even if Thomas had real arguments with the other men, he doesn’t deserve that.
