Trevor Story thought 2024 was going to be his year to make a mark on the Boston Red Sox. After dealing with injuries that kept him sidelined for the majority of 2022-23, Story entered the 2024 season healthy and ready to play.

But he made it just over seven games before finding his way back to the injured list yet again. Story dove for a line drive on April 5 against the Angels and it was immediately clear he was in pain.

The shortstop was later diagnosed with a shoulder subluxation and a glenoid fracture. He’s set for season-ending surgery to repair the fracture on April 12.

Story’s tenure with the Red Sox hasn’t been easy for him or the team. Boston had his exceptional defense to prop up the team in the beginning half of its West Coast road trip. Since Story has been sidelined, the Sox have allowed eight unearned runs, which likely doesn’t help Story feel any better about his injury.

After Opening Day at Fenway Park on April 9, an emotional Story gave an interview about his injury. He fought back tears as he explained the toll his injuries have taken on him.

Story said he knew his injury was severe from the jump — the pain he felt and the sound it made was unmistakable.

The shortstop’s emotions took over when he talked about missing his teammates and the game of baseball. Story’s been dealt a bad hand since his departure from Colorado, where he said he prided himself on his ability to play every day.

After Red Sox Nation got a glimpse of Story’s defense, his presence will be missed. His teammates seem to be short on the confidence his skills provide — Pablo Reyes, Enmanuel Valdez and David Hamilton don’t help much on the defensive front.

Story said he feels bad for missing so much time with the Red Sox. His care for his craft and for those around him is as clear as day. From taking on a role as a team leader to hosting fielding clinics to help Boston’s struggling infield, Story gave his all in 2024.

But unfortunately, he’s the latest victim of the Red Sox’s bad luck.
