The Minnesota Vikings have four quarterbacks at training camp including rookie J.J. McCarthy. He was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan. For now, McCarthy is ranked to be the backup quarterback behind Darnold.
It means that either Jaren Hall or Nick Mullens is going to be cut by the Minnesota Vikings before the start of the 2024 season. Also, another NFL team could acquire them in a trade. Minnesota has a lot of decisions to make with the quarterback position.
As of last week, J.J. McCarthy has yet to receive first-team snaps in training camp. Sam Darnold was taking all of the first-team reps.
Tyler Forness of A to Z Sports Thinks That Minnesota Vikings Rookie Quarterback J.J. McCarthy Will be Third On the Depth Chart
Entering the first week of preseason, Tyler Forness of A to Z Sports predicted how the Minnesota Vikings quarterback depth chart is going to fall out. He has Sam Darnold as the starter, Nick Mullens as the second quarterback, J.J. McCarthy as the third quarterback, and Jaren Hall as the fourth quarterback. The reasoning Forness gave was as follows:
“Seeing McCarthy at QB3 is the interesting one but it’s one that shouldn’t been a surprise. In practice, the Vikings have given McCarthy nearly half of all quarterback reps. It’s important to note that but also that Mullens doesn’t need reps, as he knows the offense well and is a veteran.
There have been rumors circulating that the Vikings will have McCarthy as the third quarterback and it’s not the worst idea for the Vikings. It gives them a real chance to continue developing McCarthy without pressuring him.”
If the Minnesota Vikings decide to make J.J. McCarthy the third quarterback in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season, it would be an interesting move. This would be very similar to the move the Tennessee Titans made last season when Ryan Tannehill was the starting quarterback and Malik Willis was the backup quarterback.
Will Levis was the rookie and a second-round pick from Kentucky. Levis was the third quarterback on the roster and they slowly let him develop behind the scenes. This is something that the Minnesota Vikings will want to do with J.J. McCarthy this season.
They will let him develop behind the scenes with Nick Mullens as Sam Darnold’s backup. There could be a plan for McCarthy to start later in the 2024 season. Levis started later in the season for Tennessee last year and is now the full-time starter for the Tennessee Titans.
