One of the best drills the Baltimore Ravens do in training camp evokes the Slip ‘n’ Slide. It’s called the Rookie Rainy Fumble Drill and pretty wet ‘n’ wild.
And Coach John Harbaugh got soaked with the rest of the rookies.
It works like this: The veterans in each position group run hoses over the rookies who are recovering a fumble in the “rain.”
It’s basically a ball-hawking or loose ball drill. If you can recover a fumble in a torrential downpour, you can recover the ball when it’s nice and dry.
(Yes, that sentence was going for the same tone as Patches O’Houlihan in Dodgeball, when he instructs, “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.”)
Watch below as coach Harbaugh turns his hat around and gets down on the wet ground like all the rookies did.
That had to feel very good on a day like today when the air temperature got well into the 90s in Owings Mills, MD. And he’s not the only Harbaugh who participates directly in his team’s drills.
The video below, posted about two weeks ago, was boosted by the Ravens account tonight:
Yes, Jim Harbaugh joined his Chargers players in doing the backpedaling sled pull drill. You have to love this stuff because being relatable is something every coach should strive to do.
This is how you get your players to run through a brick wall for you proverbially.
