The NY Jets are set to take on the Washington Commanders this Saturday in the preseason opener, and they’ll do so without their star quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, suiting up.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced this week that Rodgers will be held out for at least the team’s first two preseason games. Saleh has left the door open for the four-time MVP to appear in the Jets’ preseason finale against the New York Giants, but it’s confirmed that he won’t be playing this Saturday.

This follows a similar strategy that the team took last year when Rodgers waited until the final preseason game to make his Jets debut. That strategy makes even more sense with Rodgers still less than 12 months removed from his torn Achilles.

On top of that, the weather report for this weekend’s game also suggests the Jets made the correct decision by resting Rodgers. The turf at MetLife Stadium might be pretty wet.

What is the weather for Commanders vs. NY Jets?

Although initial reports suggested we might be in for some rain in East Rutherford, NJ on Saturday, it appears as though the rain is expected to stop before kickoff at noon ET. Most projections have the rain stopping sometime in the early morning hours.

The current forecast for Saturday’s game calls for a 10 percent chance of rain (although that number dips to around 2 percent by kickoff) and roughly 10 mph winds blowing northwest. The temperature is expected to be around 86 degrees with mostly clear skies.

Still, the field at MetLife Stadium is likely still going to be very wet from the days of rain prior. It wouldn’t be wise to trot Rodgers out there, even for just a drive or two.

Saleh already made the decision to hold Rodgers out of the team’s joint practice with the Commanders on Thursday due to inclement weather. With the rain coming down steadily in Florham Park on Thursday, Saleh decided it wasn’t worth it to risk an injury to his star quarterback.

The Jets have no reason to play Rodgers in the preseason, especially if the weather poses any sort of increased risk. They’re making the right decision here.
