Yankees shutout Marlins in dominant 7-0 win

The New York Yankees dominated their way to a 7-0 win over the Miami Marlins on Monday night at Yankee Stadium.

In what was an extremely quick game that lasted just two hours just a few hours after the solar eclipse. Anthony Volpe got the party started with a three-run home run in the third inning while Juan Soto followed that up with his own three-run homer in the same inning.

Here’s our recap of the Yankees’ win that pushes them to a 9-2 record:

3 Stars of the Game

  • SS Anthony Volpe: The second-year shortstop continues to be on a tear. His only hit was a three-run home run that sparked the Yankees’ six-run third inning.
  • OF Juan Soto: The superstar right fielder got on base three times after going 2-for-3 with a three RBI home run, a double and a walk.
  • SP Nestor Cortes: Nasty Nestor was on his game Monday night with a career-outing but more on that below.

Nasty Nestor Returns

After burning through the bullpen during the series against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Yankees needed this kind of outing. Cortes’ final line was 8.0 shutout innings allowing, two hits, no walks while striking out six. He threw 102 pitches, including 70 strikes and threw a first-pitch strike to 18-of-26 batters. Cortes also generated 15 whiffs.

Quick Hits

  • Anthony Volpe is the third Yankees player age 22 or young with at least 15 hits, five walks and five extra-base hits in his first 10 games of the season. The other two were Derek Jeter (1997) and Lou Gherig (1926). (Katie Sharp)
  • Giancarlo Stanton’s single in the fourth inning registered an exit velocity of 116.0 miles per hour, the third-highest of any player yet this season.
  • Alex Verdugo recorded his first multi-hit game as a Yankee, logging three hits including a double and an RBI single.
  • LHP Josh Maciejewski made his MLB debut Monday night after being called up. It was an easy outing for him going three-up-three-down on just four pitches.
  • Anthony Volpe’s .417 batting average currently leads MLB.
  • The official time for the game was two hours and one minute, which is the fastest Yankee game since June 12, 1992 (Talkin’ Yanks)
  • This is the eighth-time the Yankees have started the season 9-2, which also matches their best 11-game start. (James Smyth)
